Australia
Red continent, Terra Australis or Down under – Australia has many names and all of them describe the country pretty well. Seen from outer space Australia does really look red and it really does lay directly “down under” Europe. But Australia has much more to offer. Here you can find tropical rain forest but also desert; you can swim in the sea but also go skiing in the mountains. Australia has a diverse culture and ethnic background. But all Australians are united when they proudly say: “I come from the land down under.”
Did you know that:
- Australia is the world’s smallest continent but the sixth biggest state on earth
- Australians like to call themselves “Aussie” and Australia “Oz”
- Canberra became the capital of Australia because Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on it.
- Australia is still ruled by Queen Elizabeth II but a prime minister is being voted for democratically
- Captain James Cook was not actually the discoverer of Australia but simply the man who claimed the land for the British crown
