Your tasks as an au pairAn au pair's responsibilities can be quite varied. They depend mostly on the age of the children in your host family. It is just as likely that you will need to feed and bathe the children as it is that you will have play dates at the park or local swimming pool with other au pairs and their children. You might also take them to school or accompany them to various after-school activities; you can help them with their homework or play together. Before beginning your programme, you will agree with your host family on how many hours per week you will work. In most cases, this is between 25 and 45 hours. In addition to taking care of the children, you will also do light housework. Normally, you will do your work during the day, but it may happen that you baby-sit on 2 or 3 evenings per week. As a member of the family you will play an active role in joint activities. Therefore, you might spend Christmas at the beach together with your host family or get a chance to watch kangaroos with your children or attend a rugby match with family friends.
