Au pair testimonialsWe asked some of our au pairs to tell us how they spent 4th of July in the USA. You can read their stories below. If you'd like to share your experience as an AuPairCare au pair, we'd love to hear from you. Shelley from New JerseyJuly 4th was quite quiet for me as my family were away. However, there were some great celebrations going on which I managed to attend.
Grace from VirginiaI spent 4th July here in DC with both my host family and a few of my friends that I have made. I started the morning with my family at a local event with lots of the families in the area. There was fruit and drinks and nibbles, and everyone took part in the towns sack rac which was quite a sight! I stayed with them for a few hours and then went down to the Mall for the rest of the afternoon with my friends becasue there were so many interesting stalls and food places to see and try. It was a real show of how ethnically diverse America is as well as being true to the nature of Independence day. We danced with some Hare Krishnas, walked from the Washington memorial to the Capitol building and soaked up the atmosphere. We then sat in a spot on the famous mall with thousands of others and watched the Nations capitol fireworks. It lasted about 25mins and was spectacular, and the whole day was worth it just for the great atmosphere and wonderful weather. Having never been here before for a 4th July celebration, I cannot tell you whether the atmosphere appears to have changed, but it was certainly very calm and a seemingly happy occasion for all. All in all a very enjoyable day.
Jennifer from North CarolinaAs far as 4th of July is concerned, my host family were out of town, so I ended up tagging along with my friend and her family on a trip to wrightsville beach which was pretty fun. There was a definate air of celebration and the fireworks were amazing, but I can't tell you if this is a new thing, as I don't have anything to compare it to!
Naomi from MarylandI spent the 4th of July in San Francisco, so not with my host family. There was a good atmosphere there, I went to see some fireworks and then out to some bars after. I stayed in a hostel so although there were some Americans there it was mainly other nationalities who I made friends with there. In fact the 4th of July I spent the night with a group of Irish people. I had a great night - maybe not quite as "American" as it should have been but I enjoyed it non the less!
